Panera, My Love

I have a new love.

It started when Zoran instituted a new corporate firewall policy. Over the course of a weekend, all FTP uploads and SSH/telnet sessions were cut off, snapping my ability to do personal web site maintenance off at the knees.

It was most annoying.

However, my laptop computer is capable of attaching to wireless networks. If I could find a wi-fi drop, I’d be in business.

My first search for wi-fi drops on the Internet revealed a host of Starbucks with wi-fi. Starbucks? No. Too crowded, too expensive and I don’t drink that much coffee.

Then I remembered… doesn’t Panera have wi-fi drops? There’s one just up the street. They do get crowded, however, so I figured I’d do a recon mission and scope the place out. Plus, maybe eating soup and a sandwich would be better than a BK chicken tender value meal. So, I went down and got cream of chicken with wild rice soup and half a roast beef sandwich on cheese bread.

Dear God!

I may have to take up smoking. Or, install a mirror above my cube at work so I can watch myself eat. It was that good.

Today will mark the 6th lunch there in a row. Today, I’m going way out on a limb and trying the clam chowder, while I code up SMTPManager.rb, a port of my Perl e-mailer to Ruby.

Soup, sandwich, code. What’s not to love?
