Turning a Corner

I’ve started work on Effluency 2.0, my site reorg, redesign, recoding project. It’s at http://devx.effluency.net. http://devx.kenware.com will revert to its prior function as a quick and dirty testbed. Effluency 2.0, as with the new Tewksbury SpedPAC site, will be a Ruby on Rails project.

The first step is a big one: user registration and authentication. My experiences with moderating comments on this site, administering the Barscape forum and filtering input to my on-line Dice Server has led me to do some in-depth research into various spammer-fighting techniques. Additionally, Effluency 2.0 will feature, eventually, some pay-per-use services which will require strict authentication and validation. This is key. In order to provide on-line space for social interaction, discussions, creativity and game playing, I must be able to ensure that members and guests feel some measure of trust, the glue that binds all stable societies together.

As security through obfuscation is not real security, I will be discussing various authentication and verification techniques in the coming days. I hope you find it interesting.
