Ruby on Rails/Linux: Part 1

After verifying that I do indeed have backups of all the files that were on the Omnibook laptop, I decided to do a fresh install of SuSE Linux 9.3. As I only have 4gig to play with, though, I did a minimal install w/o any graphical options. I’m going for a server-only configuration. To that end, I installed the Apache web server packages as well as the C/C++ development packages, plus some other odds and ends. After YAST figured out all the dependencies, the install size came to roughly 850meg. Not bad.

I did not get around to configuring my Orinoco wireless PC card last night, however, so it’s not a server yet. I may forego the wireless card and hardwire it into the 10Base-T hub I have. (Yes, I know. Hardly cutting edge, but it works. I’m not streaming multimedia, so it’s fast enough.) By plugging it into the hub, I can more or less keep its IP address fixed. In theory.

As SuSE 9.3 is dated, the current version of SuSE Linux as of this post is 10.1, some of the software is already out of date. After I resolve the networking issues, I’ll have to see about getting the latest and greatest versions of the tools downloaded and installed.
